YOU CAN LOSE ELECTIONS, BUT YOU CAN´T LOSE FACE

Interview “WirtschaftsWoche”

Matthias Schranner has negotiated with kidnappers and hostage-takers for the police and FBI. He is founder and CEO of the Schranner Negotiation Institute in Zurich and advises clients from business and politics.

WirtschaftsWoche: Armin Laschet versus Markus Söder, Annalena Baerbock versus Robert Habeck. Only one can win. How can you imagine such a negotiation between the politicians?

Matthias Schranner: The fundamental question is who makes the decision. Is it really the two politicians or actually the party congress? How the negotiation is to be led depends on that.

WirtschaftsWoche: Let’s assume that the negotiation takes place in private. What would be the biggest mistake either of them could make?

Matthias Schranner: You can lose elections, but you can’t lose face. Because there’s a winner and a loser only if you commit early and then can’t keep that commitment. https://www.wiwo.de/erfolg/management/wer-uebernimmt-das-kanzleramt-man-darf-wahlen-verlieren-aber-nicht-das-gesicht/27061272.html
