What is peace? The simplest answer might be that it is the absence of war. However, while a ceasefire may end the war, it doesn’t necessarily lead to peace.During the Munich Security Conference (MSC), we held a panel discussion with experts on possible solutions for Ukraine. In cooperation with the GCSP, the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, we defined the key elements of a negotiation process. The most important question in any negotiation is always about defining a concrete target. Is a ceasefire sufficient for Ukraine and Russia? During our discussion, the Korean example was mentioned: North and South Korea signed a ceasefire in 1953, which remains in effect today.Or is a long-term solution needed to achieve lasting peace? Finding a peace agreement in this complex conflict, with multiple negotiation parties and competing interests, seems almost impossible. In my next posts, I will outline the key elements of a peace process and would be happy to discuss them with you.

Stay tuned.
